| I am doing my PhD in the area of Intelligent Distributed Multimedia Information systems, more specifically, multimedia systems with video content information. The motivation for this work is the need to have easy and efficient access to the vast repositories of media information/content readily available on the Web. The Web here means the Semantic Web, which is the advanced version of the current WWW, and is being designed on a paradigm of machine processability or understandability of all the web content, thus promising a revolution in the information-grabbing instincts of man-kind. When it comes to Multimedia information, there are two challenges: Firstly, automatic extraction of semantic information out of media, and secondly, representation of this information in such a away that it lends itself to unambiguous understanding by anyone (say, a software agent) who wants to use it. The former task is difficult because there is a wide gap between the low level media features (say, the pixel level video/image data) and the high level (semantic) information (say, a tennis player walking on the court and the crowd cheering in the background.) The latter task is difficult because information makes sense in the context of some ontology, and use of such media ontologies for information translation or transcoding has to be theorized and tested for robustness.
