Jodhpur is the second largest city of Rajasthan. It's also known as the Suncity (Suryanagri). It lies in the south-western Rajasthan. It's 623 km from Old Delhi and it takes around 11 hours night journey in Mandor Express. Being near the Thar Desert its quite hot in summers. Its famous for its mighty fort the Mehrangarh. It was founded by Suryavanshi Rao Jodha Singh in 1459 AD. It's grandeur makes it visible from even 50 KM away from the city. The strength of the fort can be imagined from the 58 ft wide and 117 ft high walls. Its location on a hill top and its almost circular periphery gives it an appearance of a brown Cake located in the heart of the city. Looking from the top of the fort, the constellation of tiny houses appears in a bluish tint. Hence Jodhpur is also called as the blue-city. One can imagine how safe Jodhpur has been, with this impregnable fort and all the hefty ready-to-fire cannons (now defunct!) on its roof. Its interiors show splendid examples of architectural wonders. The lively collection of palanquins, period orchestra, royal furniture, heavy swords, etc, drift you into the glorious royal life that has once flourished there.
The second marvelous place is the Mondore Gardens, situated 9 KM north of Jodhpur. Mandore was the capital of Marwar, prior to the foundation of Jodhpur. Its best to visit them during the rainy season, to witness the best greenery. The gardens have a beautiful landscape, steep hillocks, a lake, cenotaphs of Jodhpur rulers, brightly painted figures represent Hindu deities and local heroes on horseback, a mini-park for children, and lots of monkeys!
